About Us

How do you create extraordinary experiences for our guests through authentic immersion in lightly traveled locations?
Then how do we minimize our collective footprint so we leave them as pristine and untouched as we experienced them?

Always Outbound was created to meet this challenge. Our single-minded focus is on sustainable community tourism; to take travelers to places with extraordinary beauty and rich culture and then volunteer in those communities to preserve them.

Who We Are

Always Outbound is a tightly-knit group of individuals with a drive to take you to unique and endangered destinations, provide you with extraordinary experiences and engage you in valuable volunteer work in these locations. In this way, we invite you to experience the world in a whole new way and return home feeling that you have not just vacationed, but been impacted by another culture and impacted it in return.

Founder’s Note

Hello! I am Subir Kumedan, originally from New Delhi, India. My father was a social worker and chief librarian and my mother was a self-trained classical musician. Together they instilled in me the importance of travel and music, of history and culture, of conscientious thought and fearless action. It was the latter that led to my first expedition into the Himalayas at the age of sixteen and then leading trips to the Himalayas throughout my college years.

Fueled by a need of making a diffference, I did my Masters in Pharmaceutical drug design, where I worked on finding cures for both Alzheimer’s disease and Hepatitis C infection, before moving into User Experience. Over the years, I also continued to pursue nature photography and adventure travel in India, Asia and the US. Always Outbound and the concept of Voluntourism are the culmination of my love for hidden places and my desire to preserve them for future travelers.

And this is not limited to me alone. My wife Stephanie has been an adventurer from a young age. She has cycled across Africa and South India and is a four-time finisher of the Ironman Triathlon. Like me, her sense of responsibility runs as deep as her love for adventure. She sits on the board of the non-profit, Amigos de las Americas and is committed to giving back to the world that has given her such a rich and varied life.

Always Outbound and Voluntourism

Volunteering isn’t something we add on to our trips; our trips are the means by which we volunteer. They are at the core of every journey and the center of every itinerary. Along the way, we:

  • Travel to off-the-tourist-track destinations
  • Experience unique cultures and communities
  • Support those communities by leaving the smallest footprint possible, supporting sustainable practices and engaging local businesses
  • Enjoy all that a destination has to offer and work with local NGOs to protect such places for future travelers
  • Come home with incredible memories and the happiness that comes from making a difference in the life of someone else

Our Mantras

  • Deliver extraordinary experiences, every moment of every day
  • Protect cultures and communities that are in danger of disappearing
  • Karmic Capitalism: Financial success balanced by conscientious giving
  • Support local communities on every trip
  • Provide experiences that are unique, rare and memorable
  • Earn your friendship, trust and respect
  • Give you the local knowledge you need (customs, culture, communication) to go off on your own, if you desire
  • Give you the freedom to do as much or as little as you want

Thank You!

Thank you for caring to learn more about our company, our commitment and our purpose. Many travel companies focus solely on the experience. Many wonderful organizations are focused solely on giving back. Always Outbound believes that we can do both without sacrificing the value of either one.

Check out our current trips. We would love for you to join us and become a part of the Always Outbound adventure.
